Effective communication is the backbone of any robotic system, enabling seamless interaction between sensors, actuators, and control units. Selecting the appropriate communication method and protocol is crucial for ensuring reliability, efficiency, and real-time performance in your robotics projects.
In this section, we look at a particular type of communication - between the robot and the offboard computer. In most cases, you may have a powerful-enough onboard computer that will take care of all the computation for the sensor data processing, planning, and control. However, you may have weight or budget limits that prevents you from adding a heavy and expensive onboard computer needed for all of those computation. Then, you inevitably need to find out a way to have your robot communicate with your computer.
Robotic systems can utilize various communication methods, each with distinct advantages and limitations. Say that you are working with a robotic manipualtor on a fixed base. Since the robot doesn’t need to be mobile, a wired connection would suffice for the manipulator to communicate with the computer. But if your robot is mobile, you would need a wireless communication method. If you’re doing indoor drone experiments, wifi may be the best choice; but if you’re drone is flying outdoors, then you would need something more long-range.
In this section, we quickly first go over four types of communication methods (wired - ethernet; wireless - bluetooth, wifi, radio) and then briefly talk about some popular communication protocols.
